Ways to support the Black community

The Black community should be constantly uplifted and supported. Black people have sensational cultures that are, unfortunately, unjustly appropriated every day. To help end this cycle, here are a few ways you can help support the Black community.

  1. Educate yourself by watching shows and reading books by Black people. You could watch Dear White People, 13th and Da 5 Bloods. You could also read “How to Be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi and “Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race” by Reni Eddo-Ledge.

  2. Buy from Black-owned businesses online and in person. We recommend Earthtones Natural, Harriett’s Bookshop and The Oula Company.

  3. Stop purchasing from racist brands. You should stop shopping at Aritzia, Dolls Kill, Zimmerman and Urban Outfitters.

  4. Stop supporting racist influencers. For example, you could stop supporting Addison Rae, Shane Dawson, Jeffree Star, Trisha Paytas, Nikita Dragun and Jenna Marbles. Instead, support people like Lizzo, Jhené Aiko, Big Sean, Lena Waithe, Issa Rae and Kamala Harris.

  5. Donate to organizations that have the goal of supporting the Black community. You could donate to NAACP, Black Lives Matter, Equal Justice Initiative, American Civil Liberties Union and Black Youth Project.

  6. When witnessing acts of racism, whether it is on social media or in-person, call them out. Always remember that silence is violence.

  7. Safely attend a protest. Make sure that you are equipped with essentials and know your rights. Attend these events with friends to ensure safety.
