Even though we are in 2021, the fight for attaining women's rights in laws, policies, and more is not done. A sad fact is that one in every three women is abused, whether verbally, sexually, or physically, in their lifetime. (Of course, non-female people are also liable for abuse, but statistics reveal that it occurs to women on a higher basis.) Today, I want to address what is happening in Turkey.
Let us start with a few statistics:
40% of women in Turkey face exposure to physical or/and sexual violence
30% of women in Turkey are married before they turn 18, and 48% of them experience violence
33% of girls cannot attend school because of their families, thus lacking an education
11% of women are disallowed from working due to their families
But only one out of 10 women exposed to violence in Turkey ask for help.
So many girls and women need help, not only in Turkey but around the globe. Some girls cannot go to school, and some women cannot work because their families forbid them. Moreover, 40% of women undergo physical or/and sexual violence! 40%! Four women out of 10!
There are girls around the world who get forced into marriage before 18. Imagine being trapped in a loveless relationship for years without having the chance to live out a quarter of your life. Even sadder is that 48% of these girls experience physical or/and sexual violence.
Domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior in a relationship that aims to gain or maintain power and control over a partner. It cannot continue any longer because of the horrible effects it leads to. Usually, domestic abuse victims face great emotional and psychological harm due to having every aspect of their life controlled by another. Victims are not even allowed to manage whatever funds they hold.
For all the people who need help, never forget that no one deserves abuse -- it is never your fault. You are not alone. Seek out help and spread the word for those who need it.
