Recently, Texas has imposed a new law on abortion that prevents pregnant women from getting an abortion after 6 weeks from their last menstrual period. This new law goes by the name of SB8 or the Texas Heartbeat Bill. Here are the details.
The conditions
This new abortion law isn’t enforced by the goverment- but civilians themselves. Civilians cannot directly sue the woman who got an abortion but people who have performed or aided the woman in question with an abortion can get sued for a minimum of 10,000$. For example, if someone drove another person to get an abortion (i.e Uber, taxi drivers) they could have legal action taken against them. This also applies to a family member who supported them getting an abortion. Abortion clinic workers could also be unrightfully sued.
The huge problems with this law
First of all, this law was written so broadly that it could applyto any type of medical specialty and could impact all healthcare facilities. Gynecologists, obstetricians and pediatricians are also affected. It’s also very bad for rape victims because they could get sued by their perpetrators for a 10,000 if they impregnate them. Having a child isn’t a necessity, it’s a luxury. You need to have enough time and money to take care of them, or it causes problems for the parents and the child. Putting your child into adoption also might make people feel a considerate amount of guilt. It’s also very harmful for the teenagers that have to go through childbirth which is a very painful experience at such a young age.
Conclusion
In short, this law is just really harmful and violates women’s rights and causes a bunch of inconveniences. I also think that Jessica Cisneros said it best: ‘’when laws that push access to reproductive health care out of reach take effect, it’s always women of color and low-income communities that are most harmed. Others who have the resources and connections will always find a way to receive the care they need.’’ Texas should’ve realized their law was a horrible idea when even Joe Biden, the president of the United States called their law ‘’extreme’’.
