What is self care?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”. Self-care is also allowing yourself to have a nurturing experience of life. Self-care can help you sleep better, improve focus and strengthen relationships.
There are multiple types of self-care: emotional, physical and spiritual.
Emotional
Emotional self-care consists of fully engaging with your emotions. It also consists of allowing ourselves to move through our emotions in a good way. To practice this type of self-care, you could write in a journal, sing a song that you relate to emotionally and even let yourself cry.
Physical
Physical self-care includes how you’re fueling your body, how much sleep you are getting and how well you care for your physical needs. Examples of physical self-care are practicing yoga or finding a new hobby related to sports.
Spiritual
Spiritual self-care is composed of actions people take to deepen their connection with their higher self. It is to separate the ego from the soul. You can spend some time in nature, practicing prayers with a group or meditating. All these actions allow you to have a better connection with your higher self.
Other benefits of self-care
Helps productivity
Boosts the immune system
Improves your self-compassion
Makes you less susceptible to emotional health issues such as anxiety, stress and depression
Increases happiness
Minimizes frustration and anger
Taking care of your basic physical and emotional needs should really be the most important actions of your life. It’s always important to make sure that you take action to better yourself and make sure you are feeling your best. Self-care should come before other things in your life.
