Racism in healthcare

Racism in healthcare is more common than you think. From a case of COVID-19 to a severe injury needing operation, the BIPOC population is discriminated against and therefore neglected. Black people and other minority groups experience worse outcomes and premature death compared to white people.

Doctors take the Hippocratic oath to treat all patients equally, yet this fundamental rule isn’t followed. Most physicians aren’t explicitly racist, but they operate in a system that is. There are also subconscious prejudices that can affect the way we see others.

Minorities have less access to quality education, healthy food, livable wages and affordable housing. The BLM movement has gained momentum and more voices have raised up against ingrained racism.

Even doctors aren’t safe from racism in healthcare. Female Muslim doctors are harassed for wearing headscarves; Black, Indian and Jewish doctors are victims of bigotry; Some medical guides have even been published on how to deal with racist patients. Honestly, it’s sad.

Racism of any kind is no laughing matter. Please help spread this message to try and improve our healthcare system.
