In recent years, the poverty rates in Africa have been decreasing. Less Africans are living in extreme poverty, but not at a fast enough pace. Studies show that one in three Africans live below the global poverty line, which is roughly 422 million people.
Here are three of the key reasons causing extreme poverty in Africa:
1. There is a huge growth in population. The also growing economy has been struggling to keep up with the growth that the African population has undergone (estimated to nearly double by 2050), leaving many in poverty.
2. Many diseases and illnesses such as AIDS, Malaria and Ebola are another factor for the poverty rates in Africa. Due to the insufficient amount of education and medical care, this also lowers the average life expectancy of Africans and increases the amount of orphans.
3. Africa struggles with the terrible climatic conditions that climate change has brought them. The temperatures and sea levels grow as more extreme weather becomes a menace towards human health. Many floods are causing crop failures and leading to famine mainly in the population of East Africa.
Poverty in Africa is a real issue that endangers people living there. Together, we can help end this problem. We can start by donating money to organizations that care about helping them.
