Me Too Movement

What is the “Me Too” Movement?

The “Me Too” Movement is a movement encouraging victims of sexual assault and abuse to speak up, tell the world about their suffering and denounce the people responsible for it. Its purpose is to raise awareness and help victims of sexual assault feel safe and heard. The damage caused by such assaults does not stop after one day or one week. Some people stay scarred their whole lives and might even end their lives because they feel violated and not safe.

Origins

The “Me too” Movement first started by an American activist, Tarana Burke, after revealing her own experience of sexual assault. Despite beginning in 2006, it recently got more and more attention from the media around 2017. #MeToo went viral on various platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Furthermore, in 2003, Tarana Burke developed a nonprofit program called “Just Be” to help BIPOC girls from age 12 to 18 and started using the phrase “Me Too” to raise awareness of sexual abuse and assault.

Goal

The reason behind this movement is to raise awareness about the consequences of sexual assault and make people understand it is not a light matter. It is not just a minor problem that people will forget about after one month. It’s an important problem that we, as a society, need to talk more about and raise awareness to eventually solve. The goal is also to create a safe space for victims of sexual assault to denounce the people who did it and talk about the consequences on their daily lives.
