Lack of clean water in Indigenous communities

Many of Canada’s Indigenous communities have been lacking clean drinking water from the taps in their homes for decades. Having the worry of waterborne illnesses forces the community to resort to the shipment of bottled water. Canada is one of the most water-rich nations in the world, yet doesn’t guarantee access to clean water for the indigenous communities. This is one of the greatest violations of unrecognized human rights to water and sanitation.

The Indigenous leaders have filed national-class action lawsuits against the federal government, arguing that they have failed to give access to drinkable water to indigenous people, suing $2.1bn for the damages they have caused. Justin Trudeau claimed that he would end the lack of clean water for the 100 First Nations communities throughout Canada when running for Prime Minister back in 2015. Since he has made that commitment, 100 advisories have been lifted, though still, 60 remain.

Canadians typically do not think twice about if their water is safe or not, but those in certain Indigenous communities have to worry about having E. coli or remnants of toxic metals from the industry in their water, some even getting skin diseases and sores from the unclean water. This proves that many of us have been taking our safe drinkable water for granted.
