The rap music industry has been often known for its controversial nature, on race, gender, etc. Embedded within these problems arises the issue of sexuality. Homophobia is in no way a new concept, yet is extremely prevalent in rap and hip-hop.
Eminem
Back in September of 2020, rapper Eminem was criticized for his use of the word “faggot” on a song, referencing fellow rapper Tyler, The Creator. Eminem has a history of using this word and not understanding its hurtful nature. He has time and time again said that he doesn’t see this word as hurting homosexuals, and that everyone can have a different opinion on it. This does not erase all the suffering and pain behind this word, along with other slurs.
XXXTentacion
Along with his homophobia allegations, XXXTentacion’s record is stained with a history of abuse towards his girlfriend and others. While serving time in juvenile detention, he nearly killed his gay cellmate for looking at him while naked. He reportedly stomped on the man’s head repeatedly and strangled him. No remorse has ever been shown for this attack and there is even footage of him bragging about it on the No Jumper Podcast in 2016.
DaBaby
On July 25th, 2021, rapper DaBaby was performing at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida when he began speaking about HIV and AIDS.
“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, put your cell phone lighter up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cell phone lighter up.”
This hurts LGBTQ+ people due to the way that they have been affected by HIV/AIDS and to anyone fighting these diseases. Many recognized how hurtful these remarks were and took action. Boohoo clothing has dropped DaBaby from their menswear collaboration, as well as other brands. His credit from “Levitating” with Dua Lipa has also been dropped on many billboard charts, as they have opted for the solo version. Dua Lipa has also spoken out against him, condemning him for his actions and saying that “I really don't recognize this as the person I worked with."
