Difference between bisexuality and pansexuality

Bisexuality

The meaning of bisexuality has changed throughout history. The prefix “bi’ means two, which means that the majority of people believe that bisexual people are attracted only to cis men and cis women. They don’t believe it’s inclusive of the transgender community or people who are under the non-binary umbrella.

However, most bisexual people now use Robyn Och’s definition of bisexuality. (Robyn Och: renowned bisexual activist)

Och’s definition of “bi” stands for two or more genders and does not mean only cisgender men and women.

Pansexuality

Someone who identifies as pansexual is attracted to all genders, emotionally, physically or even both. The prefix means “all” in Greek, like the woman in Greek mythology “Pandora,” meaning all gifts. Pansexual people are attracted to people because of their personality, not their gender. Some people like to use the statement “hearts, not parts” to prove their point. However, some people happen to be attracted to all genders but have a preference. They then identify as omnisexual, but that’s not going to be covered today.

If you still don’t get it, here is simple representations of bisexual and pansexual people.

Standing up

Straight - standing on one leg

Gay/lesbian - standing on the other leg

Bisexual - standing on both legs

Pansexual - lying on the floor

Demisexual - floating in the air but will come down if asked to

Asexual - floating and will not come down
