CW: mentions of sexual assault, molestation and misconduct
Recently, Bill Cosby has been released from jail and quickly grabbed attention from everyone on social media.
For several years, Cosby was a renowned comedian, author and actor who starred in many shows, including the 1984 sitcom,“The Cosby Show”. Cosby also broke multiple boundaries as a Black actor by being the first Black actor to star in a drama series. The series was called, “I Spy” and was viewed by 30 million individuals in just a week.
His fame and reputation began to crumble as sexual assault, molestation and misconduct accusations were made in 2014 by more than 30 women. He was sentenced and imprisoned in 2018. However, he has managed to get his sentence overturned.
Cosby was released recently due to a technicality. In 2005, prosecutors promised not to have him prosecuted. However, it was not taken into account that the promise was binding legally. Furthermore, this detail was brought up in the 2021 Supreme Court and as a result, Cosby was set free. He had not even been jailed for long, only having been given a 3 to 10 year long sentence.
The way this has affected a widespread number of people around the world. A tremendous amount of women have gone through experiences similar to that of Andrea Constand, the woman who was assaulted by Cosby. Me Too movement activists have been enraged and thousands have sparked protests. The fact that Mr. Cosby cannot be prosecuted for a crime he clearly committed is honestly outrageous. People are jailed every day for long periods of time for things as simple as drug possession, and Cosby is somehow free. Committing a crime, violating someone like that, is in no way acceptable and shouldn’t go unaccounted for.
