Who was the president?


The former president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was 53 when he was murdered. He had a wife named Martine Moïse and three children. After winning the 2016 elections, he was elected as president. However, in 2019, people called for his resignation and political unrest became a crisis.


Jovenel Moise’s Time as President


Jovenel Moïse was highly controversial. He passed dozens of decrees since he came to power. While some of them were accepted and welcomed, some others were debated upon. To some critics, his growing power was reminiscent of the Duvalier dictatorship. Many people feared a return of autocracy as he rose in power.


What happened?


President Moïse was shot dead by a group of mercenaries armed with assault rifles. They stormed into his residence on the hills near Port-au-Prince. He was shot 12 times to his forehead and torso. Bones in his ankle and his arm were broken and his left eye was gouged out. President Moïse was found dead lying on the floor on his back. His wife, the First Lady Martine Moïse, was also shot but survived. She has since been transferred to a hospital in Florida and is in stable condition.


The Haitian and Colombian authorities alongside Interpol joined forces to investigate the murder. According to General Jorge Vargas, The order for the assassination was given three days before the murder.
