ADHD Awareness

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a mental illness affecting someone’s concentration. 8% of children and 2% of adults are affected by it. However, just because someone presents symptoms of ADHD means that they have it. You should always seek a professional diagnosis if you suspect you have it.

Facts about ADHD

-People with ADHD have difficulty learning from their mistakes. It’s best to keep encouraging them and not lose your temper.

-ADHD is most likely caused by genetics, like other mental illnesses. Severe stress or drug use during pregnancy could also be factors, but researchers aren’t entirely sure.

-Intelligence has nothing to do with ADHD. Harvard professors, writers, artists and firefighters can have ADHD. Although it can affect your behavior, like making everyday tasks difficult to complete, it doesn’t affect your intellectual capabilities. There isn’t any correlation between ADHD and IQ at all.

ADHD symptoms

The most common ADHD symptoms include disorganization, impatience and difficulty to sit still in one place for a certain time. However, as I stated before, consult a professional for a thorough and reliable diagnosis.

Myths about ADHD

-ADHD can be cured with medicine or grown out of. It affects you your whole life and can’t be cured with medicine.

-It only affects boys. Yes, boys are perceived as rowdy and energetic, but girls can also have ADHD. They just present less prominent symptoms of it, but it doesn’t mean they don’t have it.

Can ADHD be treated?

Although it cannot be cured completely, some medications can partially treat it. Support groups and behavioral therapy are good options as well, and should be considered before medication. If you have ADHD, you should explore treatment options before choosing a path. There isn’t only one right way to treat it.
