What does the AAPI stand for?
Before getting any further, the AAPI means Asian American Pacific Islander. The AAPI community is not meant to receive unacceptable hate and attacks.
According to the Asian Pacific Institute, it includes all people of Asian, Asian American, or even Pacific Islander ancestry, who trace their origins to the countries, states, jurisdictions, or the diasporic communities of the regions. ( “Diaspora: People who come from a particular nation, or whose ancestors came from it, but who now live in many different parts of the world are sometimes referred to as the diaspora.” according to Collins dictionary)
The abbreviation “AAPI” has been used by the US Government since 1998. In 1997, the White House Office of Management and Budget broke the terms Asian and Pacific Islander into two separate racial categories. Nowadays, the AAPI is commonly used in official government communication and programs.
